“How much life insurance do I need?” is one of the most common questions we hear from families in Oviedo, Winter Springs, and across the Orlando area. The honest answer depends on your situation, but a simple framework gets you most of the way there.

Start with the DIME method

Add up these four numbers:

  • D: Debts. Car loans, credit cards, student loans, and final expenses.
  • I: Income. Your annual income times the number of years your family would need it. Many people use 10 years, or the years until the youngest child finishes school.
  • M: Mortgage. The balance on your home, so your family can stay put.
  • E: Education. What you’d like to set aside for your children’s college.

Subtract any savings and existing coverage, such as group life through work. The result is a reasonable starting target.

Central Florida factors that are easy to miss

  • Home costs have risen. Many Seminole and Orange County homes now carry mortgages of $300,000–$400,000 or more. Coverage bought a decade ago may no longer pay off the house.
  • Owning a home costs more than the mortgage. Homeowners, flood, and property taxes in Florida can add hundreds of dollars a month that your family would still owe.
  • College planning. Families here often use the Florida Prepaid College Plan or a Florida 529 plan. Life insurance can fill the gap if you can’t finish funding one.
  • Stay-at-home parents need coverage too. Replacing childcare, transportation, and household work in the Orlando area is expensive.

Term or permanent?

For most young families, term life insurance offers the most coverage for the lowest cost. A 20- or 30-year term can last until the mortgage is paid and the kids are grown. Permanent policies, such as whole or universal life, cost more but last your whole life and build cash value. They can make sense for estate planning or lifelong needs.

Is coverage through work enough?

Usually not. Group life is often only one or two times your salary, and it typically ends if you change jobs. It’s a good supplement but rarely a complete plan.
